Who We Are
The Nautical Nerds is an Australian environmental charity dedicated to supporting healthier marine and coastal ecosystems.
We bring together practical conservation, scientific understanding, education and community participation to help create lasting environmental outcomes. Our work is guided by evidence, collaboration and a commitment to protecting marine habitats for future generations.
As a charity with Deductible Gift Recipient status, we are committed to operating responsibly, transparently and in the best interests of the environment and the communities we serve.
It Started on the Road
The Nautical Nerds began with a conversation between two close friends while driving from Cairns to Townsville. Fresh from sailing trips to familiar spots, they were reflecting on the noticeable decline in the reef areas they had visited for years. Having grown up around boats and the Great Barrier Reef, the worsening coral health felt deeply personal.
An Idea Takes Shape
One friend recalled learning at university about the vast oyster reefs that once covered hundreds of square kilometres of Australia’s coastal waterways and river mouths. Early settlers had dredged the oysters, destroying many of these massive reefs alongside broader environmental changes. Inspired, they researched oyster reef restoration in North Queensland and saw a chance to help revive this vital marine ecosystem.
Bringing the Team Together
After the trip, they spoke with other close friends about what they had discovered and what they hoped to achieve. The group shared a strong connection to the Reef and agreed that they wanted to turn the idea into practical action.
Some brought experience from successfully running Australian charities, while others came from medical, professional and community backgrounds and wanted to contribute their skills to something with lasting environmental value.
Together, they decided to establish and initially fund The Nautical Nerds themselves, laying the groundwork needed to build a credible and responsible organisation. Their hope is that, as the charity grows, more people will choose to support the journey through donations, partnerships, volunteering and professional expertise.

What began as an idea to help improve the health of the Great Barrier Reef has grown into an ambitious long term vision for native oyster reef restoration.
The Nautical Nerds is building the foundations for practical, evidence based restoration by bringing together research, partnerships, community involvement and carefully planned projects that support healthier waterways and marine ecosystems.
Our long term vision is to restore native oyster reef habitat at a meaningful scale, creating lasting benefits for water quality, biodiversity and the coastal environments connected to the Great Barrier Reef.
